No. 1 generating unit successfully synchronised to the grid

On 10 May 2024, NHPC successfully coupled and synchronised Unit No. 1 (60MW) of the Nachtigal hydroelectric scheme to the Southern Interconnected Grid. This is a major milestone achieved for the Nachtigal project as it marks the injection of its first megawatt-hours to the grid.
<< This operation follows a series of works and tests that have proved to be conclusive and sanctioned by certificates issued by the experts appointed for this purpose ». These were the words spoken by the Minister for Water and Energy, who pressed the synchronisation button in the control room of the Nachtigal production plant during a ceremony attended by the Minister for Finance, the Minister for the Economy, The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Finance, the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, the Spanish Ambassador, key players in the energy sector (ENEO, SONATREL, ARSEL, EDC), local administrative and traditional authorities, and representatives of the World Bank.
A significant step forward
The operation on 10 May consisted in synchronising the electrical parameters of the generator of Group No. 1 with those of the Southern Interconnected Network, closing the circuit breaker connecting the Group to the SONATREL transmission network, thus marking their coupling, and the supply to the network of the first megawatt-hours produced by Nachtigal.
This is a significant milestone for the Nachtigal project, which was 94% complete at the end of April and well on the way to completion.
Unit No. 1 will be officially handed over in the next few weeks, and the other 6 units will gradually be commissioned over the coming months, with the aim of delivering the entire Nachtigal hydroelectric scheme by December 2024.
When finally commissioned, Nachtigal will supply 420 MW, or 30% of Cameroon’s energy needs.

Le Groupe N°1 synchronisé au réseau avec succès
Le 10 mai 2024, NHPC a procédé au couplage et à la synchronisation du Groupe N°1 (60MW) de l’aménagement hydroélectrique de Nachtigal au Réseau Interconnecté Sud. Il s’agit d’un jalon majeur franchi pour le projet Nachtigal puisqu’il marque l’injection de ses premiers mégawattheures au réseau.
<< Cette opération fait suite à un ensemble de travaux et d’essais qui se sont avérés concluants et sanctionnés par des certificats émis par les experts commis à cet effet». Ce sont les mots prononcés par le Ministre de l’Eau et de l’Energie, qui a actionné le bouton de synchronisation en salle de commande de l’usine de production de Nachtigal au cours d’une cérémonie à laquelle ont pris part le Ministre des Finances, le Ministre de l’Economie, de la Planification et de l’Aménagement du Territoire, l’Ambassadeur d’Espagne, les principaux acteurs du secteur de l’énergie (ENEO, SONATREL, ARSEL, EDC), les autorités administratives et traditionnelles locales, et des représentants de la Banque Mondiale.
Une étape significative franchie
L’opération du 10 mai a consisté à synchroniser les paramètres électriques de l’alternateur du Groupe N°1 à ceux du Réseau Interconnecté Sud, à fermer le disjoncteur qui connecte le Groupe au réseau de transport de SONATREL, marquant ainsi leur couplage, et la fourniture au réseau des premiers mégawattheures produits par Nachtigal.
Il s’agit d’une étape significative pour le projet Nachtigal, qui affiche un taux d’avancement de 94% à fin avril et qui est en bonne voie d’achèvement.
Le Groupe N°1 sera officiellement réceptionné dans les prochaines semaines et les 6 autres groupes progressivement mis en service au cours des prochains mois, avec l’objectif de livrer l’ensemble de l’aménagement hydroélectrique de Nachtigal en décembre 2024.
Pour rappel, à sa mise en service définitive, Nachtigal fournira 420MW, soit 30% des besoins énergétiques du Cameroun.
